The Leatherman Wave is one of the best-selling multitools ever made for good reason — it's the right size, the right layout, and it's built well. The factory sheath it comes with, however, is a belt pouch that's just about good enough to get away with. This pattern is better.
What's in the Pattern
The Leatherman Wave Sheath Pattern PDF includes:
- Body panel with cut lines
- Belt loop pattern (horizontal carry)
- Welt (the side spacer that creates depth and protects the blade edges)
- Stitching line marks
- Punch marks for corners and edges
The pattern is sized for the Leatherman Wave and Wave Plus — both models have the same footprint. Print to scale, check the scale bar before cutting.
Leather Selection
Body: 4-5 oz vegetable-tanned leather is the standard choice. Veg tan holds its shape after forming, takes dye and finish well, and develops patina over time. 4 oz (thinner) works for a slimmer profile; 5 oz gives more rigidity.
Belt loop: 2-3 oz for the belt loop — thinner so it folds cleanly and doesn't add unnecessary bulk at the attachment point.
Avoid: Chrome-tanned leather for sheaths. It's great for clothing and bags, but doesn't hold a formed shape the same way veg tan does, and doesn't respond well to wet forming.
Tools You'll Need
- Sharp knife or rotary cutter (for cutting the leather cleanly)
- Wing divider or stitching groover (to mark the stitch line parallel to the edge)
- Stitching chisel or pricking iron (to punch the stitch holes)
- Two needles and waxed thread (for saddle stitch — both ends of the thread, one needle each)
- Beeswax (to wax the thread for strength)
- Edge beveler (to knock the sharp corners off the cut edges)
- Slicker or bone folder (to burnish the edges)
- Mallet (for driving chisels)
The Build in Brief
- Print the pattern, check scale, cut out the templates
- Transfer to leather with an awl or silver pen
- Cut all pieces with a sharp knife — one clean stroke, don't saw
- Mark and punch stitch lines on the body panel
- Glue welt piece between front and back panels with contact cement or leather glue
- Saddle stitch around the body — consistent tension throughout
- Attach belt loop
- Wet form to the tool if desired (wet leather, insert the Leatherman, let it dry)
- Dye, finish, and burnish edges
Why Horizontal Carry
The pattern is set up for horizontal (scout) carry — the sheath rides sideways on the belt with the tool accessible horizontally. This keeps the bulk low and the sheath from catching on things when bending or sitting. Vertical carry works fine too; the belt loop can be modified.
