Which Side Is the Back of a Wood Switch Plate?

Laser-cut wood switch plates look a lot alike front and back, so it's easy to wonder which way to mount one. In this 30-second video I hold up a rocker-style plate and show both sides, including the VARO logo mark, so you can tell them apart before you install it.

Why It's Not Obvious

My wood switch plates have a flat, slim profile, about 1/8″ thick. A standard plastic cover has a raised border and a hollow back, which makes the back side obvious. A flat wood plate doesn't have that, so the video shows the mark to look for.

If Your Plate Sits Off the Wall

Because the plate is flat, a switch or outlet that sits out from the wall can leave a gap. A backing plate attaches to the back of the front plate and raises it 1/8″ off the wall to close it. Plates and backing plates come in every configuration from 1 to 6 gang. There are short videos on attaching a backing plate and removing one, and the full install guide covers the rest.

Not sure which plate you need? Send me a photo of your existing plate through my Etsy shop and I'll point you to the right one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I tell the front from the back of a wood switch plate?
Wood plates are flat on both sides, unlike plastic covers with a raised border. The video shows both sides of a VARO plate, including the logo mark, so you can tell them apart before installing.
How thick are VARO wood switch plates?
About 1/8 inch, with a flat, slim profile. A backing plate can raise the plate another 1/8 inch off the wall if the switch or outlet sits proud.
