Junk Text Filter

Blocking a spam number does nothing when the next text comes from a new one. Junk Text Filter silences texts by what they say instead — SMS, MMS and RCS in Google Messages.

What it does

Filter by words, not numbers

Set a rule once and every matching text gets silenced and marked read the moment it arrives, no matter which number sent it.

Your own rules

Match a whole word, any text containing it, or a regular expression — in the message, the sender, or both. Test a sample message right in the app before you rely on it.

SMS, MMS and RCS

It works from Google Messages' notifications, which look the same however the text arrived. That's how it can catch RCS chats, which no other app is allowed to read directly.

Stays on your phone

No account, no analytics, and no internet permission at all. Your rules and the log of caught messages never leave the device.

Report in one tap

Every catch is logged. Open one and tap Report to 7726 to forward it to your carrier's spam team, with the sender's number copied for when they ask.

Install

Get it running in two minutes

Until the Google Play release, the app installs straight from this site. The download goes live here shortly.

  1. Download the APK on your phone using the button above.
  2. Open the downloaded file. Android will ask you to allow installs from your browser or file manager — allow it for that app, then tap Install.
  3. Open Junk Text Filter and tap Grant access. Read what the app will do, tap Agree and continue, then switch on notification access for Junk Text Filter.
  4. If Android shows "Restricted setting": open the app's App info screen, tap the ⋮ menu, choose Allow restricted settings, then try step 3 again. Android does this for every app installed from outside a store.
  5. Try it. Type a sample message into Test a message to see whether your rules catch it. A rule for "TSS" is included to start.

What it can't do

Android draws some hard lines around messaging apps. Here's where they fall.

Junk Text Filter reads message notifications only to check them against your rules, and keeps everything on your phone. Read the full privacy policy.
